Rabouillet is an ideal base for a walking holiday as so much can be done from the house itself or  from driving a short distance. You can choose from forest walks in Rabouillet and Boucheville forests behind the village or cross country walks in the rolling hills opposite, through maquis, ancient stone terracing and Mediterranean undergrowth.  Many of the paths are also possible on mountain bikes.

There are leaflets available with marked walks, more are marked on the IGN walking maps or you can simply choose your own itiniary from the various paths and tracks indicated.

Summits

Nothing beats a peak for that rewarding feeling of having got all the way to the top and having a 360° view. !!
In the immediate area there are the Pic du Roussillon 1314m, Croix de Marquixanes 1315m, Pic de Toulouse 1339m  Pic de la Rouquette 1289m. Most are them are off the beaten track and take a certain amount of determination, which only makes them all the more rewarding!
Slightly farther afield  (45 min to 1-1/2 hrs) drive are the equally rewarding and more frequented peaks: Canigou 2784m, Madre 2469m, Pic Carlit 2921m,  Pic de Bugarach 1230m.

Birds and butterflies

Short toed eagle, Black woodpecker, Golden Eagle, Hoopoe as well as Griffon Vulture, Goshawk, Bee Eater, Nightingale,  Wood chat Strike and many more!
If you're really lucky you might see the rarely spotted Capercaillie, Egyptian Vulture or Lammergayer
Butterfly enthusiasts have spotted the following: Swallowtail, Great Banded Grayling, Cleopatra, Adonis Blue, Chalkhill Blue.
Wildlife

In the forest you may well see roe deer, red deer, wild boar, red squirrels, foxes and badgers.
Toward the peaks you may well see marmottes and izards
There is also an unconfirmed sighting of a bear in the area....
