Where are we?
The Pyrénées
Orientales is the Southernmost French
'department' which
covers the Eastern side of the Pyrenees.
It's borders are the Mediterranean
,
Spain, and 'Aude' encompassing 'French Catalonia'.
The main town's are Perpignan (60km) and Prades (30km).Puilaurens, Queribus and Perypertuse Chateaux Cathares are easily accessible as well as a daytrip to Spain. |
Landscape and Vegetation The Pyrénées Orientales is a landscape of contrasts, with 40km of sandy beaches, 20km of rocky coast, and mountain ranges culminating in the Canigou 2784m, Géant 2882m, and the Carlit 2921m. The vegetation is also varied as a result, from dunes and coastal maquis (wild rosemary, thyme, lavender and cystis...) to the beech and pine forests at altitude, not forgetting of course the beautiful patchwork of vineyards and orchards. |
Climate and seasons
All
this makes for a varied holiday whatever the season. With 320 days of
sunshine per year the winters lend themselves easily to tourism.Spring is sometimes so mild that you can ski in the morning and jet-ski in the afternoon. Or from a culinary point of view you can enjoy a wild boar stew in the morning in the mountains and oysters by the sea in the afternoon! |
